About Hope

"We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure."

Hebrews 6:19

Hope Lutheran Church was started in 1976 by a group of Christians looking to serve Hampton Roads. Our faith in Jesus is our hope, like an anchor, in a world that is often unpredictable and disheartening.

Our purpose at Hope Lutheran Church is to be a Family of Christ that is focused on growing our faith and expanding the Kingdom of God. We are dedicated to Worshiping GodLearning His WordServing others, and Seeking the lost.

What we believe

The Holy Trinity

The three persons of the Trinity are coequal and coeternal, one God.

The Father

The Father: creator of all that exists

The Son

Jesus Christ: the Son, who became human to suffer and die for the sins of all human beings and to rise to life again.

The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit: who creates faith through God’s Word and Sacraments

We are a Lutheran Church

As a Lutheran church, we follow the Bible-based teachings of Martin Luther that inspired the reformation of the Christian Church in the 16th Century.

The 3 Solas

These are the 3 core principles of the

Reformation that guide Lutheran Theology

For more info about our beliefs on specific topics check out this comprehensive list!

Sola Gratia

Grace ALone

We are saved not by our good deeds but by His Grace alone. “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus”(Romans 3:24).

sola

fide

Faith Alone

Jesus was the substitute for all people of all time. By His suffering and death, He purchased and won forgiveness and eternal life for them. God’s Word says that we are saved by grace through faith in Christ Jesus and not by our own efforts or works (Ephesians 2:8-9)

sola

scriptura

scripture alone

The Bible is God’s inerrant and infallible Word. Through it, God shows us our desperate need for saving and reveals Jesus Christ as that Savior. It is the only place we look for what to believe - not politics, traditions, or human reason.
